The
gardens sit on the western slope of the Kohala Mountain, north
of Kawaihae in the North Kohala district on the Big Island. The
Pacific ocean is less than a mile to the west. There is a 180 degree
view of the ocean. The garden site has a gradual slope with deep
rocky ravines, which gives Pua Mau Place its distinctive character.
With
low rainfall and intense sun, this area is ideal for plant cultivation,
provided there is adequate water. We have 2 wells on
the land and the gardens are on a drip irrigation system.
The
area has stony soils of volcanic origin. We have an area for
the production of mulch, that is then applied to the garden.
Pua
Mau Botanical Gardens is located off Highway 270 on Ala Kahua Drive
(Kohala Estates) just north of Kawaihae. Turn at the 6 mile marker,
1/2 mile up the hill to the gate at a lava rock wall. (see map)
Self-guided
tours are presently available with mulch covered avenues throughout
the garden for your walking enjoyment. Umbrellas are provided for
a shaded walk.
